American icon punk rock originals
A wicked blonde rockabilly guitar player with a wide stance and a sly smile, a stoic drummer who keeps the propulsive beat charging ahead with tasteful, voluminous thuds, and a couple of ex-couple dark poets howling like hungry wolves into the canyons of Hollywood. It can only be Los Angeles’s best export to the music world, seminal LA punk band X. Billy, DJ, John and Exene. I saw them play with Devo at Long Beach Arena and nearly every show after. What I loved about X was their western Americana doomed romance pathos they conveyed in a way that set them apart from almost every other band around them. John and Exene’s pleading harmonies sound like a lover’s quarrel drunk on cheap red wine and too many cigarette’s. Billy Zoom tears off perfectly crafted roots rock riffs that have a genuine musical sneer to them, as if they’re saying, “You’re gonna have to practice in your room every day of your life kid if you wanna get this good.” Anyone who watches them play knows they are seeing something unique and truly original; country western music with speed, distortion, blues and angst. Impossible to pin down, they are simply X. There never has been and never will be another band quite like them. American icon punk rock originals. Somehow I know that James Dean and Marilyn Monroe would’ve been big fans.
